Eric Anderson, whose company Space Adventures is the only one which has sold a space tourism package to five space tourists at a cost of US$20 million each for an eight-day trip, recently announced plans to build a spaceport each in the United Arab Emirates and in Singapore.
Space tourists on Space Adventure’s flight to the International Space Station (ISS) also have the option of doing 1.5 hours of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) or spacewalk for an extra $15 million.
"One and a half hours is about one orbit of the Earth, so they get to see the entire planet," said Anderson. "They experience complete daytime and nighttime, plus watch the planet in its beauty and splendor."
The Singapore spaceport, costing $115 million and to be built near Changi Airport, is a joint venture with local consortium of backers.
Its spaceport in United Arab Emirates, costing $265 million, is scheduled to be ready by 2008 and will be built by the UAE government at Ras Al-Khaimah Airport.
Virginia-based Space Adventures plans to sell tickets at $100,000 each for its space flights. Space tourists will take off from its Singapore or UAE spaceports in a Russian-made five-person space planes, for a suborbital flight aboard Russia's Soyuz rocket.
"We are looking at a market of up to 10,000 space tourists a year," said Anderson, who is also offering budget flights in a Russian MIG-25 fighter jet 80,000 feet into space, for a view of Earth's curvature for just $24,000.
Space Adventure already has clients for the launch of its space tourism flights, though none for its spacewalk, Anderson claimed. Its first commercial “moon trip” for space tourism around the moon will cost an estimated $100 million each.
"Space tourism will be a significant portion of the overall travel and tourism industry over the next 20 to 25 years," added Space Adventures’ CEO. "Only Space Adventures owns the rights to sell seats aboard Russia's Soyuz rockets."
Space Adventures requires space tourists who wish to do the spacewalk to undergo an additional 190 hours of training, including underwater extra-vehicular activity (EVA) simulations, spacesuit training and altitude chamber training sessions. "But it’s less than the amount of training a typical astronaut does," said Anderson.
Professor Jeff Hoffman, an ex-NASA astronaut who has spent 24 hours doing spacewalks and fixed the Hubble Space Telescope, completed 400 hours of underwater training before going into space.
Meanwhile, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic has appointed nine travel agents in far-off Western Australia as agents for its space flights, which will cost $200,000 each and include five minutes of weightlessness on its fleet of five SpaceShipTwo.
Set up in 2004, Virgin Galactic which is spending $240 million on the venture and has collected $14 million deposits from 158 would-be astronauts as passengers on its suborbital space tourism flights, scheduled for take-off in 2008 when the first paying customers are expected to fly aboard the first craft.
Designed by Burt Rutan, Virgin Atlantic spaceline plans to operate a fleet of five passenger-carrying private spaceflight vehicles, starting in 2008 after putting the vehicle through up to 100 test flights.
"SpaceShipTwo will fly up to 200 miles into space and carry seven paying passengers, with the assistance of two pilots," added Rutan, winner of the $10 million Ansari X prize, the first manned private craft to fly into space.
Space passengers will undergo three days of space training for the up to three hours of trip into space.
The spacecraft will have extremely large porthole windows for the passengers' viewing pleasure, and all seats will recline during launch to help decrease the discomfort of G-forces. All passengers will be allowed to fly without the aid of pressure suits and the experience will be similar to a high-altitude passenger jet.
According to Branson, SpaceShipTwo will initially take off from the Mojave Spaceport in California, until completion of its $220 million permanent Southwest Regional Spaceport site in New Mexico by 2009, built in joint venture with the state government.
The company has also announced plans to build similar spaceports in Florida, Saudi Arabia and Scotland, depending on the success of its spaceports in Mojave and New Mexico.
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, is also building another spacecraft for suborbital flights, scheduled to take-off in five years. His company is constructing a spaceport in West Texas to launch the space vehicles that will take off and land vertically.
| Cozumel and Cancun are going Luxury 8/17/2006 2:48:49 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment Cozumel is about to get its first five-star resort and Cancun has completed a $20 million beach improvement which could be the start of a new direction for both destinations.
The 220-room Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort and Spa is "considered the beginning of the transformation and re-positioning of Cozumel as an up-market, luxury destination," said Grupo Presidente in a statement.
This is definitely a bright spot arising from last year's hurricane devastation in the area. Many resorts are not just rebuilding but upgrading as they complete the repairs.

10. Morans on the Weir, Galway | TSA is trying to figure out the new rules 8/14/2006 11:58:25 AM Link 0 comments | Add comment The TSA is trying to establish some clarity and logic with the new rules following the arrests in Great Britain last week. As everyone knows the "new" threat involves taking liquid components on board and making the bomb on board the plane. All liquids, pastes and gels are suspect.
On Sunday permission was granted to allow small amounts (up to 4 oz.) of liquid nonprescription medicine ont a plane. The TSA said it would let flyers cary on low blood sugar treatments, including glucose gel for diabetics, solid lipstick, and baby food. But it said all aerosols are prohibited.
Also banned are mascara, baby teethers with gel or liquid inside, children's toys with gel inside and gel candles.
Flyers must now remove all shoes and pass them through the Xray machine. Before this was optional. Flyers can continue to wear shoes containing gel heels, but they must remove any sort ot gel sole insert and put those into checked baggage.
As you travel you may see more police-trained sniffing dogs, along with more random gate inspections and bag searches.
So the general rule remains as before, leave adequate time to get through security, breathe deeply and relax. Most of all enjoy your trip when you do get there. | Cruise lines revise itineraries in wake of terror plot 8/13/2006 12:05:43 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment Cruise
lines were busy trying to inform guests of itinerary changes and contingency plans over the next few days due to the widespread disruption and delays at airports worldwide following news that British law enforcement authorities arrested 21 people in an alleged terrorist plot.
Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said that the Carnival Liberty, scheduled to end one voyage and start another on Aug. 11 from Civitavecchia (Rome), might be delayed to allow guests extra time to get to the vessel but currently there were no plans to alter the ship's itinerary. Carnival also contacted its guests about the newly prohibited items on flights from the U.S. and the U.K.
Cunard spokeswoman Jackie Matthews said there were no changes to the Queen Mary 2's scheduled departure from Southampton Aug. 11 for its transatlantic crossing to New York. The QE2 departed Aug. 10 on schedule from Southampton for a 14-day Mediterranean cruise.
Holland America Line changed the departure times on seven of its ships leaving ports in Europe, Vancouver, and Seward, Alaska, over the next four days.
European departures are most dramatically affected, with the Amsterdam's embarkation from Copenhagen pushed back to Aug. 11 at 11:45 p.m. instead of 5 p.m., and the Prinsendam's departure from Lisbon at 4 a.m. on Aug. 15 instead of 5 p.m. on Aug. 14.
HAL said it made the changes due to increased security measures implemented in airports worldwide to allow its guests additional time to reach the ships.
Norwegian Cruise Line has not made changes to any itineraries yet, but said it will continue to monitor the situation and advise of any changes on its Web site, www.ncl.com. It also
has information on the site regarding new aviation regulations.
Princess Cruises
spokeswoman Karen Tetherow said the Golden Princess departed as scheduled Aug. 10 and will return to Southampton, England, on Aug. 20. Passengers heading home from London after its latest sailing were
experiencing flight delays as expected, Tetherow said. "We
are standing by to assist passengers as needed," she added.
Seabourn Cruises
said the Seabourn Pride departed Copenhagen,
Denmark, Aug. 10 "short a few guests" that will join the ship in
Helsinki, Finland, said spokesman Bruce Good. He said two ships departing
Civitavecchia, (Rome) on Aug. 12 and they will base any changes on events that transpire over the next few days.
Windstar Cruises pushed back departures on its next two sailings in Europe by two hours each. Both the Wind Star out of Athens and the Wind Surf out of Barcelona will leave at 7 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.
| Update on the new security rules 8/11/2006 9:29:55 AM Link 0 comments | Add comment The arrest yesterday of 22 suspects in London who allegedly were planning to use liquid bombs on up to 10 airplanes flying from London-Heathrow Airport to the U.S. caused an immediate change in flying procedures by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)and Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and will likely disrupt airline security for some time to come. DHS declared a "red" alert for flights bound from the U.K. to the U.S. and also raised the terrorist threat throughout the U.S. to "orange." The TSA advised travelers to put all liquid-based substances, such as hair gel, lotion, suntan oils, shampoo, contact lens solution and toothpaste, in their checked baggage. They cannot carry these
onto the airplane, including any liquid refreshments. The exceptions are: baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling;
prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket; and
insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines. For more details, visit www.tsa.gov.
